Duramax Diesel L5P Update

Number of days: 2

Duramax 6.6L engine was updated in 2017 with the introduction of the L5P. There was also an update to the L5P which is found on the medium duty applications.

This L5P course will review the changes made and subsystems to know. Tony Salas, instructor will cover the following:

a. Engine design and changes compared to LML

b. Turbocharger update and diagnosis 

c. Denso Common rail system, low pressure and high-pressure review

d. Low fuel rail supply and hydrocarbon injector operation

e. Aftertreatment Review on L5P

f. Diesel Particulate Filter Diagnosis 

g. SCR and NOX, issues with NOX sensors

h. EGR Operation

Training will include the use of service information. There will be service manual exercises and knowledge quizzes to enhance the technician’s knowledge of how these subsystems function on a L5P.

Scan tool review will include review of scan data and use of diagnostic trouble code charts. There will be extensive discussion on resets and SCR related tests to run when vehicle is in derate.

The Duramax 3.0L in line six cylinder has brought the GM light duty truck into the future with new vehicle and powertrain technology. The common rail injection has been installed on new technology starting with the engine mount system designed for comfort and less vibration. 


The variable nozzle turbocharger has an electronic actuator tied in with a network of communication named Single Edge Nibble Transmission (SENT) protocol for faster communication and diagnostics. The induction system includes the use of a coolant cooled charge air cooler.


This class will cover the systems found in this new engine introduced in 2020 1500 series trucks for Chevrolet and GMC. The enhanced cooling system is named the Active Thermal Management System. Training will be provided on the operation and diagnosis of this system. 


The aftertreatment system will be discussed and each component will be taught on operation and diagnosis. This includes the various sensors used such as the NOX and Particulate Sensors. Service and active regenerations will be observed using the scan tool. The SCRoF will be introduced and service procedures will be demonstrated on a live vehicle. Training will include engine design and diagnosis. Lastly, maintenance will be will reviewed and recommended service procedures to follow.


Diagnosis and use of the service manual is essential and vital in performing proper repairs and maintenance. Training will cover proper procedures to follow.

Course Details                               


Horsepower and torque have been increased and new medium duty models are using engines seen on light duty trucks. Duramax has the L5P and the L5D. This engine is not only used on 2500 and 3500 series trucks, but also 5500 series with bigger truck body and increased towing capability. Components have been changed using a Denso Common Rail Injection System and updated Turbocharger. 


The RAM Cummins 6.7L engine has been updated with the use of the CP4 injection pump and revised fuel injectors. Body controls have increased with additional options. 

Ford has also updated the Powerstroke 6.7L. One of the major changes is the used of a new turbocharger. Strategies for OBD functions have changed especially when it applies to the Aftertreatment System. 


This course is designed to instruct the technician description and operation of the diesel engines found on Ford, GM, and Dodge trucks. The diesel engines which are covered are the Dodge Cummins 5.9L CR and the 6.7L, the GM Duramax 6.6L, and the Ford Powerstroke 6.0L, 6.4L and 6.7L. Updated information is provided with the newer 2017 plus models.


Instruction in this 5-day course will provide newer information and updates. Emphasis will be placed on the use of service information, the scan tool, programming procedures. The use of SCR (Select Catalyst Reduction) on newer trucks brings need to discuss and instruct on operation and repair. Emphasis will be placed on the technician to follow a diagnostic strategy.


Course Objective:  Given the training, service information and tools, the technician will repair and diagnose Powerstroke, Duramax and Dodge Cummins diesel drivability complaints. Information provided will aid the technician the ability to follow a diagnostic strategy.

Powerstroke 6.7L Update Training Course

Powerstroke 6.7L Update Training Course

The Scorpion motor as the 6.7L was called when introduced by Ford in 2011 model year. This was a new diesel engine that was different using reverse flow cylinder heads and piezo common rail injection from Bosch. The use of an enclosed EGR cooler and two cooling systems gave technicians new technology to understand when diagnosing issues. There were updates to the turbocharger and the EGR cooler using primary cooling. The aftertreatment with diesel particulate filter (DPF) and selective catalyst reduction (SCR) is evaluated to ensure emission reduction by NOx sensors and particulate sensor.


In this updated two-day course, Tony Salas instructor and a technician, will review the operation and design of the Power Stroke 6.7L. He will discuss the use of the service information where Ford provides numerous procedures in repairing issues with this powertrain. He will review updates on:


  • Common rail testing procedures/fundamental testing and reduce CP4 injection pump failures. Discuss injector evaluation on vehicle, programming issues with IQA codes.
  • Engine operation and testing, understand the issues brought about by excessive crankcase gases (blow-by)
  • CAN communication, review diagnostic link connector (DLC). Resolve no communication issues.
  • Review diesel particulate filter (DPF) ash accumulation and soot issues. A hard look on servicing but also preventing issues.
  • Review charging system wiring and diagnosis. What to do when the charging light is on?
  • Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) issues will be discussed. Training will review the operation but also the tests needed to diagnose derate issues and NOx reduction complaints. A thorough discussion on DEF fluid and NOx sensor role in emission reduction.
  • Diagnosis using the scan tool. Review of KOEO and KOER self tests. Develop proper skills using and knowing tests provided by the scan tool.


Turbocharger operation and updates will be provided. Training will include review and role playing of diagnostic procedures.

Duramax Diesel was introduced in 2001 with the LB7 and has evolved through the years. LLY engine to the LBZ and on to the LMM brought significant changes with the electronics and emission components. The LMM brought changes and the first with a diesel particulate filter (DPF). The LML and LGH brought newer challenges with revised emission controls and use of a full aftertreatment system that included DPF but also selective catalyst reduction (SCR). For 2017 a new change was brought in with the L5P and L5D found in the 6500 series trucks.


This course is designed to update the current technician with the latest technology found on new LML, LGH, L5D and the L5P. Topics include engine design updates, service, and diagnosis. Diagnosis evolves with revised fuel systems found which include Bosch common rail and Denso common rail. Technicians will be updated on the procedures to follow in working with aftertreatment. The aftertreatment will be reviewed and discuss issues that can be found. 


The key to diagnosing issues involves the powertrain as a whole. Training will include repair of various diagnostic trouble codes that involve aftertreatment, common rail and turbocharger. Emphasis will be on derate issues brought on by insufficient NOx reduction to fuel timing and quantity.

Demonstrations will include use of the service manual and scan tool.

Electrical 1 Training Course

Course instruction is focused towards applying basic electrical theory and use in testing circuits and components such as sensors and actuators found on vehicles with electronic control systems.


​This two-day course provides the technician with the understanding of electrical principles and practices that are utilized while performing a driveability diagnosis.  Ohm’s Law is analyzed as well as the theory of DC current.  Discussion includes the operation of series and parallel circuits.  By using electrical trainers, technicians are provided the opportunity to learn of the features of a multimeter (DVOM) and layout of electrical circuits. Technicians are provided access to vehicles for a practical understanding of the theory analyzed and used to test charging, sensor and actuator circuits.  Instruction on wiring diagrams (schematics) are learned and applied on various trucks on hand.  Technicians will use worksheets to assemble circuits which include relays and circuit breakers.


Course Objective: Given the electrical trainers, multimeter (DVOM), instruction and service information, the technician will test and understand DC electrical behavior in common circuits found on diesel engines today.​

Electrical 2 Training Course

Basic electrical and electronic fundamentals were covered in the Electrical 1 Training Course. Electricity was described as the movement of electrons. This course continues with the types of resistors and variable resistors such as the potentiometer. 


Circuits with variable resistors will be assembled and reviewed. Construction of variable resistors, plus their uses, will be explained and showed on a vehicle. Sensors that use these variable sensors will be analyzed in wiring diagrams. Once analysis is completed, there will be assigned tasks on the vehicle as hands-on training. 


Training will continue with the introduction of semi conductors. Construction of the bipolar transistor will be viewed with the use of another semiconductor, the diode.  P type and N type material will be shown, and circuits will be assembled during the course on training boards. Technicians will use the multimeter test transistors and diode properly in a circuit. 


Training will include the use of wiring diagrams and schematics. Technicians will analyze power and ground distribution circuits. Use of the popular manufacture’s wiring diagrams will be quizzed in order to learn how to read a diagram properly. 


There will be an introduction to labscope operation and use. Basic operation of measuring voltage and time is used to learn how to read basic DC signals. Using digital labscope will allow the technician to use this tool to diagnose issues found on vehicles today.


Hands-on exercises will be conducted on electrical/electronic training boards and on various vehicles. 


Multimeters will be available for use, but technicians are encouraged to bring their own.

The Duramax engine has evolved and has many versions which have changed since it was introduced in 2001 model year. Tony Salas will be instructing you on the older LB7 to the newer LML Duramax Diesel. Tony has been involved with the Duramax 6.6L and continues to train technicians in the diesel repair world.


This is a two and half day course which starts on Friday afternoon and continues all day Saturday and Sunday. Training covers all of the versions of the 6.6L Duramax extensively. Hands on training will include these engines and demonstrations will include items and techniques you can use tomorrow when diagnosing and repairing these trucks. Case studies will be covered.

The success of the Powerstroke Weekend has brought the need for the Dodge Cummins weekend. This is a weekend course that starts on Friday afternoon and ends on Sunday.


The Dodge Ram equipped with common rail injection on both the 5.9L and the 6.7L have brought issues to technicians. Technical information and procedures are available in this course. The 5.9L with CR (common rail) was introduced in 2003. The use of a high pressure fuel system is diagnosed by “sub-system” to make an accurate assessment on what failed. The low pressure and return system are checked. Service procedures are explained. The Cummins 6.7L is also instructed along with additional emission controls and electronics.

There are many technicians who become frustrated with the lack of information and procedures when dealing with Ford Powerstroke trucks. This course will provide you with the ability to become competent and knowledgeable in order to become more efficient and profitable!


This three day event will commence with a roundtable discussion of technicians bringing their take on day-to-day dealings with these vehicles, an introduction to service information available, the use of an IDS scan tool and other scan tools plus aftermarket scan tools, and the Powerstroke 6.7L engine. The second day will cover the Powerstroke 6.0L engine and its systems. The course will wind up with the Powerstroke 6.4L and 7.3L engines.


All instruction will focus on information needed to aid you in diagnosing these Powerstroke trucks. Our goal is to provide technicians with techniques and skills needed to repair these engines. Training will include hands-on demonstrations on engines and on vehicles!

The design and application of light and medium duty trucks with diesel powertrains is evolving and changing the transportation industry. Service writers are now required to have a minimum level of technical knowledge of diesel engines and related subsystems used in various diesel SUVs and trucks. Electronics have evolved with the use of networks where computer modules are sharing data and performing tasks to operate the transmission, brakes and even the instrument cluster or display of a vehicle.


This one-day course will review the basic technical knowledge needed to understand the common failures and issues with diesel trucks today. Discussion will cover appropriate labor rates and software that is available to calculate labor hours and parts to be charged. Labor rate instruction will offer a view of the overhead costs that a diesel drive-in service facility incurs. 


Course Objective: Given the tools needed, such as service repair order software, the service writer will provide a full repair order with customer information, VIN number and other information related to the service and repair of a customer vehicle. The repair order will completely document information related to parts, labor, sublets, notes, and documented communications regarding repair and diagnostic services. Repair order and documentation of customer authorization will be obtained in accordance with local consumer affairs rules and regulations.​
