Aftertreatment 101
As a diesel service manager, service writer, or technician, are you up to date on aftertreatment?
2007 and later diesel-powered vehicles have used aftertreatment systems. This includes Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC), Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and later models have added a Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR). These emission control systems have brought about numerous issues and are often come-backs for a drive-in service shop.
In this course, we will be discussing the operation and diagnosis of these systems. Sensors and components will be reviewed. Regeneration will be viewed and discussed with actual case studies from vehicles diagnosed and repaired in a drive-in shop. Discussion will include service information from GM, Ford, and RAM. There will be mention of other makes, but the training will focus on the reality of issues found with the DPF and SCR. DEF fluid can affect the reduction of NOX emissions while the DPF aids in reduction of particulate matter or soot.
Engine driveability issues affect aftertreatment operation. Training will include common maintenance and faults that cause issues with premature aftertreatment failure.

Electrical Diagnosis: A Start on Networks - Scan Tool to DLC
This training course involves networks, and will provide instruction on the diagnostic link connector (DLC) and the types of communication used for powertrain and other subsystems found in a truck today.

Duramax L5P Introduction
The latest model Duramax V8 6.6L engine is the L5P which is the newest diesel offered by General Motors. This V8 diesel is found in the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra and provides 445 horsepower and 910 foot pounds of torque.

Duramax L5P Diagnostics
Note: This is a continuation of L5P Introduction course.
We will discuss the diagnostic techniques to be used on a Duramax L5P. Diagnosis will require the technician to have knowledge and understanding of the subsystems in this newer L5P Duramax.
Subsystems we will train on are:
- Engine overview, compression and intake - not always a basic thing!
- Denso Common Rail Fuel injection system
- Turbocharger
- Aftertreatment (DOC, DPF and SCR)
Diagnosis will begin by using a basic strategy and continued with the scan tool using diagnostic trouble codes (DTC). Diagnostic Codes to be reviewed will cover fuel timing and aftertreatment. Training will also cover lift pump operation and network communication.
This course will review issues found with injector timing and volume DTCs that can be an issue especially setting after an injector replacement.
Use of the service manual procedures will be demonstrated and emphasized. Scan tool data and screen shots will be demonstrated.

The course covers the description and operation of the Powerstroke 6.7L diesel engine found on Ford trucks starting in model year 2011. This engine has been designed with reverse flow cylinder heads, two cooling systems and a Bosch piezo common rail fuel injection system. The vehicle is also equipped with an extensive aftertreatment system for emission control.

Powerstroke 6.7L Common Rail Testing
Powerstroke 67L Bosch Piezo Common Rail (CR) has challenged the diesel technician in diagnosis.
In this course, we will review the description and operation of the common rail fuel injection system found on the Powerstroke 6.7L engine.
The low pressure, high pressure and return system found on this complete CR system will be discussed. We will use not only fuel pressure tests, but discuss cap and debris inspection as well.
The CP4 injection pump has had issues, which is reviewed, and provide tips to prevent the catastrophic destruction of this pump.
An emphasis on the specific return tests and review of the operation of the volume control valve (VCV) and the pressure control valve (PCV) will be presented.
Fuel filter replacement has been a concern in the life of this CR system. We will review the proper procedures of their replacement.
Service information and use of the scan tool using IDS will be demonstrated.

Ram Cummins 6.7L Diagnostic Review & Aftertreatment
Updated information on the 2015 and later Dodge Ram Cummins 6.7L. In this 1.5 hour online course, we will demonstrate the operation of the following:
- Turbocharger operation and issues
- Common rail review and instruct on the new CP4 pump on the 2019 models
- Engine diagnosis
- Aftertreatment system and tests to perform
- TIPM modules and wiring
